Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Wooden spoon

Ingredients

  • Butter, 3 tablespoons
  • Dates (chopped), 1-1/2 cups
  • Sugar, 1-1/2 cups
  • Walnuts (chopped), ¾ cup
  • Flour, 2-¼ cups
  • 2 eggs
  • Hot water, 1-1/2 cups
  • Baking soda, 1-½ teaspoon
  • Vanilla extract, 1-½ teaspoon
  • Salt, 1-½ teaspoon

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x5-inch loaf pan with butter, and set aside.
  • In a medium bowl, combine dates, sugar, and walnuts. Stir together until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, eggs, hot water, baking soda, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir together until the ingredients are fully incorporated.
  • Add wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix as this can cause the bread to become tough.
  • Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread evenly. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Once finished baking, remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

  • For sweeter bread, add more sugar and dates.
  • If you don't have hot water, you can use boiling water instead.
  • Make sure not to overmix the batter as it will make the bread tough.
