Equipment

  • peeler
  • grater
  • Mixing bowl
  • pastry blender
  • 9-inch pie plate

Ingredients

For Pie Filling

  • 8 medium apples
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 pie shell
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • ¼ cup white sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt

For Top Crust

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • ½ cup brown sugar

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Prepare a 9-inch pie dish by lightly coating it with cooking spray.
  • If using a premade crust, place the shell in the prepared pan and set aside. For homemade shells, roll out the dough so that it fits into the bottom of the pie pan and flute the edges.
  • Peel and core 8 medium apples, then slice them into thin wedges. In a large bowl, mix together ½ cup brown sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon, ⅓ cup all-purpose flour, 1 tsp nutmeg, ¼ cup white sugar, and ¼ tsp salt. Toss the apple wedges in the bowl until they are evenly coated in the mixture, then pour it into the prepared shell.
  • In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, ½ cup of unsalted butter (cut into small pieces), and ½ cup of brown sugar. Rub the ingredients together with your hands to form a crumbly texture, then sprinkle it over the apple filling in the pie shell.
  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Allow it to cool before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Make sure to use tart apples, like Granny Smiths, for the best flavor.
  • For a flaky crust, don't overwork the dough when making it. Work quickly and handle it as little as possible.
  • To keep the top crust from becoming soggy, brush it lightly with melted butter before placing in the oven.
  • If you want a sweeter pie, add more sugar to the filling before baking.
  • For an extra hint of flavor, sprinkle raw sugar over the top of the pie before baking. This will give your crust a nice crunchy texture!
  • Let your organic apple pie cool completely before slicing and serving. This will ensure that the filling has had enough time to firm up and set.
  • Serve your organic apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, or some freshly whipped cream for an indulgent treat!
