Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Baking dish

Ingredients

  • 8 cups of thinly sliced and peeled apples
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 tsp unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice water

Instructions

  • Prepare the apples for your apple pie. Peel and thinly slice 8 cups of Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, then add them to a large bowl. Toss in 2/3 cup of granulated sugar, 6 tsp of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg and 1/4 tsp salt.
  • Create the crust. In a large bowl, mix together 2 and 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 tsp of salt, and 1 tsp of sugar. Cut in one cup of cold unsalted butter with a pastry cutter until crumbly. Gradually stir in 1/4 to 1/2 cup of ice water with a fork until the dough holds together.
  • Assemble the pie. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9-inch pie plate with half of the dough and spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust. Dot with 6 tsp of butter and cut into small pieces. Place remaining dough over top, pinch edges to seal, and make slits to vent steam.
  • Bake the pie in a preheated oven for 55-65 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before serving so that all of those flavors can really come through. Enjoy your homemade McCall's Apple Pie!

Notes

  • For a crunchier crust, use cold butter straight from the refrigerator when making the dough.
  • To prevent an overly sweet pie, use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp apples, and reduce the sugar in the filling to 1/2 cup.
  • To make a lattice top crust, roll out the remaining dough into a large circle or rectangle and cut it into strips. Layer them over the top of the pie in a crisscross pattern.
  • If you find that your pie is browning too quickly during baking, cover it with foil for the final 10-15 minutes of baking.
  • Don't forget to let your pie cool completely before slicing and serving! This will help it set up properly and prevent it from falling apart.
