Equipment

  • A pot and skillet

Ingredients

  • 5 cups brown rice
  • 6 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • salt and pepper according to taste
  • 2 lb ground pork sausage
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 2 red bell pepper chopped

Instructions

  • Begin by bringing 10 cups of water to a rolling boil in a large pot. Once the water is boiling, add 5 cups of brown rice and let it cook for approximately 45 minutes or until fully cooked. The rice should be tender but still have a slight bite to it.
  • Preparing the star of the dish - the ground pork sausage. In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until it is fully cooked and has a nice brown color on the outside. Use a trusty wooden spoon to break up the meat into small pieces as it cooks for even browning. Once the sausage is cooked, remove it from the skillet and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels to drain off excess oil.
  • In the same skillet, add the chopped onions and red bell pepper. Cook them over medium heat until they are soft and lightly browned, approximately 5 minutes. Then, add in some minced garlic, cayenne pepper, thyme, and paprika. Stir everything together and cook for an additional minute until the fragrant aroma fills your kitchen.
  • Now it's time to combine all the delicious components of this dish. Add the cooked sausage back into the skillet with the sautéed vegetables. Give everything a good stir to incorporate all the flavors. Allow it to cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Finally, add in the cooked brown rice and stir everything together until all ingredients are well combined. Season with some salt and pepper according to your taste preferences and let it cook for an additional 5 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld together.
  • Step 6: Once ready, transfer the Bojangles Dirty Rice to a serving dish and serve it up hot for a true taste of Southern comfort food.

Notes

  • You can increase the amount of cayenne pepper or add some hot sauce to the dish if desired.
  • Make sure to let the cooked brown rice cool completely before adding it to the skillet. This will prevent it from getting mushy.
  • You can also add in some diced celery or carrots for added crunch and nutrition to the dish.
