Crispitos are a Mexican-inspired dish that was popularized in the United States by cafeteria chains in the 1980s. They are crunchy, savory tortilla chips filled with ground beef or chicken and seasonings and then baked until golden brown. The unique taste of Crispitos has made them a popular choice for snacking and entertaining.

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons paprika
  • 1 tablespoons turmeric
  • 2 tablespoons cumin
  • 16 oz ground beef Or ground chicken
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 3 tablespoons chunky salsa
  • 5 tortillas 10-12 inch round
  • sour cream for serving
  • vegetable oil cooking spray
  • queso sauce for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray generously with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, mix together the paprika, turmeric, cumin, and ground beef or chicken until incorporated.
  • Add water and salsa and mix again until blended together. Divide the mixture into 5 equal parts. Place one of the tortillas on the baking sheet and spread 1/5 of the beef or chicken mixture over it, covering it completely.
  • Top with another tortilla and repeat until all 5 tortillas are used up. Spray generously with cooking spray. Bake for 20 minutes or until the edges are golden and crispy.
  • Allow cooling slightly before cutting into wedges with a pizza cutter. Serve with sour cream and queso sauce, if desired.

• Use your favorite salsa for Crispitos for extra flavor.
• Feel free to add additional spices such as garlic powder or chili powder for extra flavor.
• For a vegetarian version, you can use crumbled tofu in place of the ground beef or chicken.
