Equipment

  • Oven
  • Bowl
  • Skillet
  • Baking sheet

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 2 cups frozen corn
  • 2 onion chopped
  • 8 cups mashed potatoes
  • 4 carrots minced
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper according to taste
  • 2 cups frozen peas
  • 4 cups beef or vegetable broth
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil. Add in ground beef or lamb and cook through.
  • Stir in frozen corn, onion, carrots, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Pour in frozen peas and beef or vegetable broth, and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour and cold water until well combined.
  • Add the flour mixture to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
  • Pour beef mixture into a 9x13-inch (23x33 cm) baking dish, spread evenly, and top with mashed potatoes.
  • Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

  • If desired, you can top the dish with some shredded cheese before baking it.
  • For a vegetarian version, omit the ground beef or lamb and use vegetable broth instead of beef. You can also add some diced mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Make sure to use russet potatoes for the mashed potatoes, as they will mash up the best.
  • For a spicier version, add some chili powder, cayenne pepper, or your favorite hot sauce.
