Equipment

  • Grill

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chuck 80% lean or ground turkey (90% lean) (choose based on your preference for richness or leanness)
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons canola oil for searing the patties
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to season the meat
  • 4 hamburger buns split and lightly toasted
  • 8 thin slices Swiss cheese for melty, nutty goodness
  • 4 thin slices smoked ham for a savory layer
  • 2 dill pickles sliced into 1/4-inch-thick pieces (for a crisp, tangy bite)
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise for a creamy base
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard for a tangy kick
  • 4 cloves roasted garlic mashed into a paste (for a sweet, aromatic flavor)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce optional, for umami depth in the patties
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika optional, to add a subtle smoky flavor to the patties or mayo.

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Dice your pickles, mash the garlic, and have everything ready to go. This makes the cooking process smoother.

Step 2: Form the Patties

  • In a bowl, mix the ground chuck with Worcestershire sauce and a dash of salt and pepper. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and form patties. Aim for a slight indent in the center of each patty—this helps the burgers cook evenly.

Step 3: Preheat the Grill

  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. Adding a bit of oil helps prevent sticking.

Step 4: Sear the Patties

  • Once the grill is hot, place the patties on it. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on one side. Flip, then lay two slices of Swiss cheese on each patty. Close the grill lid—this will ensure the cheese melts beautifully.

Step 5: Add the Ham and Toast the Buns

  • During the last minute of cooking, place your slices of smoked ham on top of the cheese to heat them through. Meanwhile, lightly butter the insides of your hamburger buns and toast them on the grill until golden brown.

Step 6: Assemble the Burgers

  • Spread a layer of mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the bottom bun. Place the cheesy patty topped with ham, followed by pickles. Top with the other half of the bun.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

  • Serve immediately while everything is hot and bubbly. Enjoy with your choice of sides!

Notes

  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh produce and quality meat can make a huge difference.
  • Don’t Overwork the Meat: When forming the patties, handle the meat lightly for a tender burger.
  • Monitor Cooking Temperature: Using a meat thermometer can help; you want it at least 160°F for ground beef.
  • Experiment with Flavors: Don’t hesitate to add spices or herbs that you enjoy into the meat mix.
  • Assembly Matters: Layering your ingredients thoughtfully can enhance the flavor and presentation.
