Equipment

  • Bowl

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe Hass avocados peeled, pitted, and diced
  • Juice of 2 fresh limes
  • 1/4 cup freshly chopped cilantro
  • 3 tablespoons finely minced red onion
  • 1 or 2 jalapeños finely chopped (adjust for desired heat level)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder for extra depth of flavor
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons neutral-flavored canola oil optional

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

  • Start by prepping your avocados. Slice them open, remove the pit, scoop the flesh into a bowl, and mash lightly with a fork. Aim for a chunky consistency—this isn’t about puréeing your avocados into oblivion!

Step 2: Add the Lime Juice

  • Squeeze the juice of two limes over the mashed avocados. The acid helps keep the avocados vibrant green and adds that sunny, zesty flavor. Stir gently.

Step 3: Mix in the Cilantro and Onions

  • Now, add in the freshly chopped cilantro and the minced red onion. Both offer a fresh taste that brightens the dip. Stir until just combined.

Step 4: Spice It Up

  • Now for the jalapeños and the garlic powder! Adjust the amount based on your heat preferences. Stir them in, making sure not to overmix—maintain that delightful chunky texture.

Step 5: Season to Taste

  • This is where you add salt and freshly cracked black pepper. Start with a pinch and taste along the way. Remember, you can always add more, but you can’t take it out once it’s in!

Step 6: Optional Oil Addition

  • If you like a creamier texture, drizzle in a bit of canola oil. This step is optional but can add depth.

Step 7: Serve Immediately

  • Guacamole is best enjoyed fresh. Serve it with your favorite tortilla chips, or spoon it generously atop tacos or grilled meats.

Notes

To perfect your guacamole, consider these tips:
  • Choose Ripe Avocados: Give them a gentle squeeze. They should yield slightly without being mushy.
  • Lime Juice is Key: Use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice lacks the brightness you’ll need.
  • Don’t Skip the Garlic Powder: It adds a layer of flavor that rounds out the guacamole.
  • Adjust Heat Levels: Gradually add jalapeños until it suits your palate.
  • Serve Fresh: If you can’t serve it immediately, cover it tightly with plastic wrap to limit air exposure.
