Instructions

  • In a bowl, combine the active dry yeast and granulated sugar. Pour 1/2 cup of scalded lukewarm milk over the mixture and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, or until the yeast becomes frothy and activated.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the activated yeast mixture along with the wholesome egg, Himalayan salt crystals, and vegetable shortening (or margarine).
  • Gradually add the all-purpose flour to the wet ingredients, mixing continuously until a soft and elastic dough forms.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
  • After the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface.
  • Divide the dough into equal portions and shape each portion into round rolls. Place the rolls in a greased baking pan, leaving space between each.
  • Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Brush the risen rolls with melted butter for a golden finish.
  • Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until they turn a beautiful golden brown.
  • Once baked, remove the rolls from the oven and brush them again with melted butter.
  • Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm, not hot. If the water is too hot, it will kill the yeast and the dough will not rise.
  • If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  • Cover the rolls with a damp cloth while they rise to help keep them moist.
  • For a sweeter roll, brush the rolls with melted butter before baking.
  • For a more flavorful roll, add some herbs or spices to the dough.
